b. Classification of Blogs and Opinion about the Most Appropriate Classification Approach

Blogging has become a trend so popular that in the internet, the amount of blogs doubles and triples each year. Some people pick up blogging as a form of hobby, while some engage in blogging as escapism from reality. As the time passes, the amount of blogs increase and it blurs the line between styles, making identifying types of blogs harder. The most noticeable ones would be the News blog. This is a product of when blogging is merged together with news reporting. Instead of using blogs as a diary, the bloggers attend media conferences as a representative and later on report to people the news through the blog. It became an informative blog, a form of news reporting.

Gogic (2009) and Simons (2008) identify blogs according to the purposes and posts of the blogs. Simons (2008) identified nine types of blogs while Gogic (2009) categorized blogs into 25 different styles. However Simons (2008) are more detailed when it comes to the classification of blogs. She also looks at the target audiences, the formats and the aims of the blogs. Gogic (2009) focused only on the content and posts of the blogs to classify them. I personally think that the best way to classify a blog is to view all aspects of the blog. The content of the blog may be significant but the audience that it seeks and the format of the blog plays a very important role too. As the lines between styles are slowly disappearing, it is essential that all aspects are taken into consideration before being put into a category.
